Who stays with us

Photographers chasing a season. Writers and researchers on a project. Families here for summer school. Remote workers who’d rather live in a neighbourhood than a hotel.

Thinking of renting an apartment instead?

Renting in Japan for a few months usually means a long lease, key money, a guarantor and an empty flat to furnish. Staying with us means none of that — just a calendar. Wi-Fi, linens, towels and a washing machine are ready when you arrive, and our team is a minute away when something comes up.

A quiet neighbourhood, close to the sights

Nishijin is Kyoto’s old weaving district — a residential neighbourhood of machiya, small shops and a historic public bath. Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, is about 10 minutes away by bicycle or 20 minutes on foot — and the cottages come with free bicycles.

What guests say

Myself, my husband and our 5 year old daughter had a lovely 2 week stay with Expo Cottage. Hosts were super helpful and the home was very comfortable. We loved getting to know the local shops/cafes/restaurants in the quiet neighborhood.

The accommodation is a refurbished machiya that has been lovingly decorated in a traditional style with a modern twist. All the necessary amenities are provided for a comfortable stay, even for longer periods — we stayed for two weeks. This is the perfect place to stay to experience a little of the normal Kyoto life.

Cottage guest, January 2026

Our family of three was very comfortable in the place. The neighbourhood is quiet and quaint, with plenty of good restaurants and supermarkets in walking distance. … Our original plan was 6 nights but we extended to 9 nights as we were enjoying ourselves so much.
